In recent years, the world of niche perfumery — especially among those drawn to horror scents — has become filled with reviews and conversations surrounding fragrances with distinct personalities. (And as someone who deeply loves this category, I’d define a “fragrance with distinct personality” as somewhere between a pleasantly beautiful scent and a subtle sense of discomfort.)
But in a country not particularly known for perfume culture or darker olfactory aesthetics like Thailand, where do these scents hide? Beyond the familiar aroma of mango sticky rice, there may be stranger scents waiting to be discovered.
Today, we’re introducing five fragrances from Thai brands that may not be widely talked about, but quietly carry unusual and intriguing personalities worthy of standing alongside cult favorites from abroad.

The scent slowly unfolds into rich, dense florals wrapped in a soft warmth, while beneath it lingers a dark animalic undertone, shadowy, intimate, and slightly unsettling. A scent of grief, layered with a strange and beautiful depth.

Inspired by the poignant tale of a mermaid’s tears (Yes, we have mermaids too.) behind its name, “Assan,” meaning The Tears of the Ocean, this fragrance feels like a sorrow carried quietly across endless waters.
A gentle white floral with soft aquatic undertones, it feels sheer, delicate, and heartbreakingly fragile. There’s a ghostly cleanliness to it. Unlike THE FAREWELL FLOWER, which carries a deeper and more intimate melancholic presence, Assan evokes a quiet melancholia that lingers softly in the sea air.

The ambergris here doesn’t smell clean or conventionally aquatic. Instead, it carries the damp salinity of deep ocean water, wet seaweed, tobacco smoke, and earthy darkness, creating something eerie and almost ritualistic.
This is not an easy fragrance, nor does it try to be universally loved. It’s strange, dry, and salty, like something washed ashore from the sea at midnight. But somehow, I know you’re going to fall in love with it.
